Your Faith, Your Life

An Invitation to the Episcopal Church

Live God's love: Tell what you have seen and heard.  — Mission statement for Diocese of Bethlehem

These ten words "Live God's love: Tell what you have seen and heard" is the mission statement for the newspaper for the Diocese of Bethlehem in Pennsylvania and reminds us all that as members of the body of Christ each of us is called to serve God in the world. We are to "live God's love"--heal the sick, feed the hungry, give rest to the weary, comfort the suffering. These are the ways in which we fulfill our baptismal promises. Watch this video together, and explore the questions below.

Questions for reflection and conversation:

People fulfill their baptismal promises in many ways at home, at work, and in their communities. Brother Karekin Yarian, BSG has chosen to do so within a religious community.

These are the promises we made, or were made on our behalf, at baptism:

Celebrant      Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and
fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the
                 prayers?

People          I will, with God’s help.

Celebrant      Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever
you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord?

People          I will, with God’s help.

Celebrant     Will you proclaim by word and example the Good
                 News of God in Christ?

People          I will, with God’s help.

Celebrant      Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving
                 your neighbor as yourself?

People          I will, with God’s help.

Celebrant      Will you strive for justice and peace among all
people, and respect the dignity of every human
                 being?

People          I will, with God’s help.

1. What do you do right now to fulfill each of these five promises?

2. What Christian practices would you like to begin or deepen to fulfill these promises?

3. What do you need to sustain your commitment? (Answers may include support from community, time for prayer or study, education, and so on.)

We invite you to post your responses on the "Conversations" page.

YFYL Chapter 7, Additional questions for reflection or discussion:

1.    Read Isaiah 42: 1-3 replacing "my servant," "him" and "he" with your own name. What is this passage saying to you? How does God see you? What is God calling you to do?

2.    Ask yourself these two questions the same time each day for a week: For what moment today am I most grateful? For what moment today am I least grateful? What patterns do you notice in your answers? Do your answers suggest thing that you would like to do more? Less?

3.    Choose one of the three methods for discerning your gifts in the chapter to do together with the group.

4.    What ministry does every baptized member share? In what ways are you called to fulfill that ministry?

5.     How do your beliefs about God, creation, and community impact your ministry?
6.     Choose three kingdom parables in Matthew 13. What do the parables suggest about the kingdom of God? How are you invited to participate in that kingdom?
